School Safety
SCHOOL SAFETY
Sweetwater County School District #1 worked diligently throughout the summer on school safety. In June, the district collaborated with Homeland Security, Rock Springs Police Department, Rock Springs Fire Department, and the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office participating in a school safety presentation by John-Michael Keyes of the "I Love U Guys" foundation. Following the presentation, Officer Meddler of the RSPD trained the leadership team which included central administration leaders as well as principals, directors, and coordinators on the Standard Response Protocol (SRP).
The Standard Response Protocol plan was created by the "I Love U Guys" foundation to create a uniform response to incidents. The four symbols and phrases above are the specific actions that can be performed. More information on the "I Love U Guys" foundation can be found here. The SRP posters will be found in every classroom and every hallway of the buildings in Sweetwater #1. Staff members will have a summary of the four actions on the back of their ID badges, which they are required to wear at all times in the district.
District All Staff Meeting
On Wednesday, August 26, 2015, the district held an all staff meeting at Rock Springs High School. The focus of the meeting was School Safety. The Department of Homeland Security brought back Mr. John-Michael Keyes to address the entire staff and introduce the Standard Response Protocol.
Crisis Management Plan & App
In tandem with the SRP, Sweetwater #1 is utilizing SchoolDude's Crisis Manager app to distribute the new Crisis Management Plan to staff, students, and parents. If ever in a crisis situation within the district, the app offers quick and easy access to step by step directions on what to do in a specific situation.
Download the "SchoolDude Crisis Manager" application on your mobile device. Instructions on how to use our plan are Here
Evacuation Plans
In July, Sweetwater #1 met with the Rock Springs Fire Department to identify standard evacuation routes for each building. The evacuation plans are another step in the direction of school safety, common language, and partnerships with public safety officials.
Safety Drills
Wyoming state statute requires monthly safety drills for all public and private schools. With the new SRP, these drills can be one of the following four: Lockout, Lockdown, Shelter, or Evacuate. Sweetwater #1 intends to continue to foster the partnership with public safety. RSPD and RSFD will be asked to attend and participate in drills throughout the district.
In the 17-18 school year, Reunifications are being introduced in all of our district schools. A reunification is a process used to reunite students with their parent, guardian, or emergency contacts somewhere other than the school. Schools continue to participate in reunifications to ensure the community can respond efficiently.

STUDENT SAFETY A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the classroom response to an incident at school.
Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff and administration. Our school is expanding the safety program to include the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). In the event of an emergency, the action and appropriate direction will be called on the PA.
- HOLD: "In your Room or Area" Clear the halls.
- SECURE: "Get Inside, Lock Outside Doors" No one in or out.
- LOCKDOWN - “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight”
- EVACUATE - “To the Announced Location” POLICE LED- "Evacuation After a Lock Down"
- SHELTER - “For a Hazard Using a Safety Strategy”
Please take a moment to review these actions. Students and staff will be trained and the school will drill these actions over the course of the school year.

Climate Survey
**Climate survey was postponed the Spring of 2020 due to Covid.** Survey data will be updated when the survey is administered again.
Climate Survey
Climate surveys provide valuable information to better understand climate and culture in our schools. Originally, the climate survey was administered as an accountability measure for our alternative school. After seeing how easy the survey was to administer and how easy it was to read results, district leadership extended the opportunity to 6-12 schools. Gathering student data can offer meaningful and valid information about relationships, school safety, school climate and culture. District and school fall results have been reviewed by schools and district committees. Overview of results shows students believe that schools have high standards (88%), the teachers expect them to do their best all of the time (92%), the teachers have high expectations for students (87%) and the teachers believe they can perform well (88%). Students also believe the lack of respect is an issue in their schools. Students believe they do not treat property with respect (49%), they don’t treat staff with respect (47%) and they don’t treat each other with respect (55%). For additional detailed information about the survey, please click here: District Climate Survey.
Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS)
PBIS is a framework for maximizing the selection and use of evidence-based prevention and intervention practices. It utilizes a multi-tiered continuum that supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral competence of all students. RTI (Response to Intervention) or MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) involves an education process that matches instructional and intervention strategies and supports to student needs in an informed, ongoing approach for planning, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction, curricular supports, and interventions. This framework is multi-tiered and involves increasingly focused and intense instruction and/or interventions in both academics and behavior across the tiers. For more information about supports in place for students please click here.
