Definition of AT: AT is a device and/or service that is determined to be educationally necessary for a student to access his/her general curriculum and/or make progress towards his/her IEP goals. AT equipment, whether low tech or high tech, is provided to allow students to complete an educational task he/she would not otherwise be able to complete.

Teams must consider each student's need for assistive technology (AT) devices and services (Special Factors) in the development, review, and revision of student IEPs.

When the IEP team determines that a student may require assistive technology devices or services, the Teacher of Record in conjunction with the IEP Team should trial available AT (school-based or from the AT Library).  (To borrow from the AT Library, send an email to scottl@sw1.k12.wy.us with the subject Assistive Technology and a description of what is needed.)  The provided assistive technology should be integrated into instructional activities, and the Teacher of Record, service providers, and/or special or general education teachers will need to collect data to document the success/failure of the AT. Multiple trials may be necessary if the student is not successful with the first device or technology selected.

At the conclusion of the trial period(s), the Teacher of Record will either:

  1. Issue a PWN stating that AT will not be added to the student’s IEP and provide a summary of the documentation for this decision
  2. Amend the IEP to include the AT that the student successfully utilized. The amendment should include a PLAAFP that fully documents how the student is using the AT to improve educational outcomes.

If the team determines that the student requires assistive technology that is not available through the AT Library, the Teacher of Record should send an email to scottl@sw1.k12.wy.us with the subject line “Assistive Technology” and a description of what is needed.  The AT Team will review the request at the next scheduled AT Team meeting to determine if the technology can be borrowed or if it will need to be submitted to the Director of Special Services for approval of purchase.  The Director Special Services must be notified and approve the purchase before it is written into the IEP.
